Trump's True Thoughts On Renewables

Forget everything you think you know about Donald Trump’s views on renewables.

As the case is with everything in politics (the events of the last week alone should be provide ample proof) nothing is as it appears at face value.

Now don’t get me wrong… Trump’s anti green movement rhetoric is famous.

Just yesterday, in his most recent attack on carbon-neutral energy, he referred to the famously progressive leftist dream, commonly known as the Green New Deal, as the ‘green new scam’.

And his most vocal supporters love it just like they love their diesel trucks and propane stovetops, but when you look at the reality of the American decarbonization moment, you begin to see that words only tell part of the story.

Right now, four of the top five solar producing states in the U.S. are either republican-leaning or solidly republican.

Democrats Love Renewables… Just Not In Their Backyards

Texas, Florida, Arizona, and North Carolina, with two others in the top ten.

So despite what the voters on the street might be thinking, when it comes to big business, the importance of green energy has aleady been established even in the reddest regions of the country.

Given that Trump is two things above all else, a businessman and a promoter, the idea that he would miss the opportunity to bolster his position, as well as the strength of American infrastructure, is at best shortsighted.

Renewables currently account for 12% of all energy production in the U.S. That’s equivalent to the total power demand of Germany.

So for Trump, who is now virtually guaranteed the presidency after last weekend’s attempt on his life, to fail to support this absolutely vital slice of our infrastructure pie is an absurd proposition.

But don’t take my word for it, please. Look at his newest biggest supporter, Elon Musk, a man whose name is virtually synonymous with electric power, batteries and carbon neutrality.

Why would the billionaire personification of the green movement ever support a candidate who’s been publicly outspoken against it?

The answer is simple… Because while Trump may make plenty of big statements between now and November, in the end, he will behave as he is programmed to behave — a capitalist.

He knows there is demand, there is supply, and there are other nations with whom to compete. And all of this spells more, not less investment in renewables on every level, from power generation to the batteries that support them.

One particular thing the Trump administration is probably already looking at is utility scale power storage batteries for wind and solar power generation.

These batteries, which provide short term energy storage, are absolutely essential as daylight and weather patterns make 24/7 power production impossible.

And right now, Lithium-based batteries are the standard.

Lithium, unfortunately, can be a bit of sore spot if you’re an American, because we have to source almost all of ours from none other than the Chinese.

But a new kind of battery, which lasts up to 30 years or 25,000 charge cycles, is making all of these issues moot.

Batteries That Will Outlast The Solar Farm

Referred to as Vanadium-flow, these batteries are usually bigger and heavier than their lithium counterparts, but in an application where size and weight make no difference, and the most important factor is longevity — as the case is for utility scale power storage — they are perfect.

And as the name suggests, they use no lithium at all.

Right now, there’s a small, UK based vanadium battery company that’s starting to make waves in the U.S. market.

It’s already won Department of Energy contracts, and with the advantages these batteries present, is chipping away at lithium’s dominance of this space.

So don’t listen to Trump’s words, but anticipate his actions. Everything you just read his advisors already know or soon will.

With this next presidential term being his last, and the pressure of reelection forever lifted, he will be free to cement his legacy — and strengthening American infrastructure is the biggest achievement any president can aspire to.
